Apparently, my last post stirred up some heated emotions on graffiti, vandalism being taken as art. Me, I've seen a lot of vandalism in my day, but I believe in art.
And there isn't anybody out there who can't say the highlights in this video aren't art. This is art. It's some phenomenal friggin' art.

This is not art. This is vandalism. When you paint or modify something that is not yours it is vandalism. Unless you have permission, which they did not. Just because the transit agency was not erasing it right away does not give permission. I will say if these images were done on a proper surface then it would be art.
ReplyDeleteIt is vandalism. It is also art. They are not mutually exclusive. Art is defined by artistic merit. While that is somewhat subjective, legality has nothing to do with whether something is art or not. Trying to change the definition of a word to suit a political or social agenda should be resisted, even if the agenda is one you support. Otherwise you get Orwellian manipulation of language. If a law could make something "non-art", then many famous works of art that were painted in protest of governmental actions would by definition not be "works of art" at all.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Anonymous! That was beautifully put.
ReplyDeleteVery Interesting Information! Thank You For This Blog!
ReplyDeletePersonally I beleive that graffiti is a form of art and expression. Therefore I would have it encouraged ,instead calling it vandalism. Teenagers sometimes may be depressed, or something may be going on there lives and they can't tell anyone about it. so they proceed to express themselves through graffiti. A simple form of art ,expression , and emotion. Take an example. Say a friend is having troubles in his family and he needs an outlet then it's different. He is simply getting rid of the load and stress that he is carrying. It can be the only way out. Or, it could be mere stupidity; like taking a can of spray paint, and doing graffiti on someones car as a prank. Then that is definitly vandalism. Spraying or drawing on a building, that is vandalism. Like for example: At a school I know someone decided to spray paint a picture of a crotch as a practical joke. He thought it was funny. He thought it was cool. Now he has been expelled fo vandalism. But aside from that fact I still shall support graffiti. It is simply expression ,when useed right.
